The upcoming Super Bowl is on Sunday February 9, 2025 at the Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans. The Superdome is a 15 minute walk from the Amtrak station in New Orleans. Not only that, there are many hotels just blocks away from the train station as well as the stadium. This proximity poses an interesting proposition. You can get to this event from just about any large city or urban area in the United States by train. That means, no lines at the airport, comfortable seating, relaxing journey and possible sight-seeing stops along the way. If you get a rail pass, you can hop on and off the train while making multiple stops. Why not go to the Super Bowl by Rail?
San Francisco Bay Area to New Orleans
For example, here is the journey to get from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Super Bowl in New Orleans. It is a long, but simple trip. We chose Oakland – Jack London Square as a starting point. The Coast Starlight is the line you take to get to Los Angeles. You can reach L.A using this route, from just about anywhere on the west coast. From Oakland it’s about a 12 hour trip leaving about 9am and arriving about 9pm. From there you take the Sunset Limited straight through to the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. It is a .5 mile walk to the Superdome from this terminal. There is lodging very close as well. Depending on what day of the week you leave, you may catch the Sunset Limited on the same night. It leaves at 10pm. You may have to catch the train on the next day and spend the night in L.A. Either way, it is an easy transfer. It is a 45 hour ride to New Orleans from there, so sleeping on the train will be part of the journey. All seats recline for sleeping, including coach class, and there are private rooms available.
Super Bowl by Rail – Affordable and Rewarding
Prices for Oakland to Los Angeles currently start at $55 each way per person. L.A. to New Orleans currently starts at $120 per person each way. So, pricing is similar to airfare or lower for this particular route. The obstacle for most people would be the travel time (3 to 4 days). If someone has time, going to the Super Bowl by rail can be broken up and turned into visits along the way, which is what we recommend. There are some great historic sights and destinations, for example Disneyland and California Adventure, to see along this route and Amtrak multi-ride passes can make getting off and on the train easy and affordable. Some of the other amusement parks in the Los Angeles area are Universal Studios Hollywood, Knott’s Berry Farm and Magic Mountain.
